Galloglass or gallowglass (Irish gallóglach, from
gall, 'foreigner', and óglach, 'young warrior-
servant'). An armed servitor or foot soldier in
ancient Ireland. Shakespeare speaks of kerns
and gallowglasses as coming from the Western
Isles of Scotland. See also KERN.
